Founder and president, Family Life Center International, former evangelical pastor, and founder, St. Joseph’s Covenant Keepers, Steve has led youth, campus, and pro-life ministries for more than forty years. A graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, he served as an evangelical pastor for a decade before his entire family converted to Catholicism in 1990. Responding to a challenge from Pope John Paul II to strengthen families, he started the Family Life Center International in 1992. The Board of the Carolina Catholic Professionals is pleased to announce that our founder, Frank Dirks, has been awarded the Benemerenti Medal by Pope Francis.

The Benemerenti Medal is awarded by the Pope to members of the clergy and laity for service to the Catholic Church. Bishop Guglielmone of the Catholic Diocese of Charleston bestowed the medal upon him on March 7^th at 3:00PM in a small ceremony at the Cathedral of John the Baptist. Frank is a humble man so we have to do the boasting for him. Through an abundance of prayer and reflection Frank founded Carolina Catholic Professionals in January of 2017 with the goal to organize a group of Catholic professionals who would support one another and provide a network for faith sharing and service. Carolina Catholic Professionals meets on the First Friday of every month at the Meeting Hall adjacent to the Diocesan Offices at 901 Orange Grove Road in West Ashley. During the pandemic the meetings have been virtual.

At the meetings we ask our speakers to discuss their personal journey of faith and their work in the world and what they see to be meaningful trends and developments in our community, state, and nation. Carolina Catholic Professionals is a Charleston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization associated with Lucis Via Charities, Inc. Funds raised through the organization have helped to establish Catholic Radio in South Carolina at Bishop England High School, supported the Daughters of St Paul mission, gathered food for Our Lady of Mercy, advocated for residents of Charleston impacted by gentrification, and laid the ground work for the St John Cemetery Project.

The remains of as many as one thousand souls are buried in this Catholic cemetery. Frank Dirks, Marie Donnelley, and Joan Mack read the names of the 380 people known to be buried there. Rev. Timothy Akanson, Parochial Vicar at Christ Our King, led a Rosary in remembrance of our departed brothers and sisters.

Meeting Outcomes

We discussed the possibility that virus mitigation efforts will require the cancellation of the kick-off event. We decided to continue planning until such time as circumstances require a different course.

Before the meeting Patrick shared his request to the Diocese for the Bishop’s role in the launch event, which would include a Mass, blessing of equipment, and a small gathering with special guests. We are awaiting a response from the Diocese but will proceed as if that will be the schedule.

Jason reported that Catholic Radio technicians have conducted and onsite installation assessment that resulted in changes to the original planning assumptions. The antenna now will be mounted on the chimney of Building B. The transmitter will be located in Jason’s work area. This arrangement will require new high-speed fiber cable. Frank will reach out to Michael Brennan on installation status. (Since our meeting, Michael has indicated that after remodeling the transmitter room and fiber installation next week he anticipates providing a firm date range for installation and broadcast commencement.)

Lindsay is the collection point for all individuals and groups to be invited to the launch day. We agreed that she will manage two lists; the first for broadly announcing WBEI to the community and the second a smaller list of key individuals for participation in the special event with the Bishop. Everyone should submit names/groups/contacts by the end of next week. Frank will seek names of key St. Clare of Assisi parishioners from Father West.

Frank has connected with the Knights of Peter Claver and they will participate along with the Knights of Columbus.

Meghan will lead the logo development process involving Lindsay, Eduardo, Joan, and Joe. They will accelerate the process to finalize the design by the end of next week. All agreed on a two-color design.

Frank, working with Lindsay, Meghan, and Patrick, will prepare a talking-point/case-statement by next week. This will serve the message for our communications outreach that we will execute in collaboration with the Diocese communications office.

Meghan will work with Eduardo, Richard, and David Seay on digital platform development.

Joan has made contact with a Post & Courier feature writer, Adam Parker, and will make an introduction to our communications team.

Clayton offered to be a point of contact for printing options.

How to Pray the Rosary

The Introduction

Begin the Rosary by making the sign of the Cross:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Then say the Apostle's Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ,
His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

The Decades and Mysteries

The traditional Rosary is divided into three parts, each having five mysteries: Glorious, Joyful and Sorrowful. In his apostolic letter The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, Pope John Paul II proposed a new set of mysteries, which he called the Luminous, and which concern the period of the public life of Our Lord. For those who wish to say all 20 decades at once during the course of a day, they may be said in the following order: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious.

For each decade of the rosary, announce the mystery and pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and One Glory be while meditating upon some aspect of that mystery.

Ours is a volunteer run and driven organization. Money that we raise goes almost entirely to the groups and causes we support. Our expenses are generally limited to website expenses, printing, and event costs. Our annual IRS financial statement is available online roughly by the middle of the following year.

Throughout 2019 we held our First Friday Fellowship and Networking Lunches at the Diocese of Charleston meeting hall. We have been blessed to enjoy this wonderful relationship with the diocese staff there and we were extraordinarily grateful to have had the following outstanding men and women speak throughout the year.

Catholic Radio Fundraising Event, 14 February

In February, as part of our effort to bring a low-powered FM Catholic Radio station to Bishop England High School, we were blessed to have Gloria Purvis, national radio host of the EWTN Morning Glory radio program return to her hometown of Charleston for a day of fundraising. We were also blessed to work in collaboration with the parish of Saint Clare if Assisi. We have enjoyed a very positive and productive collaboration with the administration of Bishop England High School.

Annual Fall Fellowship Dinner, 24 October

Lt. Gov. Pamela Sue Evette gave powerful testimony on the influence of Catholic Christian faith in her life, family, and career. During the evening we were pleased to have many of the groups and organizations we support share news on their activities and good works. Groups also had display tables in a mini “exhibit hall” for the evening. Our Fall Fellowship Dinner attendance continues to increase. Our monthly communications regularly reach more than six-hundred souls.

Fundraising and Service

We work to support Catholic apostolates and ministries as well as complementary causes. We also try to respond to the promptings of the Spirit by serving souls we encounter. In 2019 we raised and/or helped raise more than $48,000.

We gave and/or passed through the following amounts:

Pamela Sue Evette of Travelers Rest was elected as the 93rd Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina on November 6, 2018. Evette has been the recipient of numerous business and professional accolades, including the ATHENA Leadership Award®, which honors individuals who assist women in reaching their full leadership potential and provide community service; the Women’s Presidents Organization/American Express 50 Fastest-Growing Women-Owned/Led Companies Award; and being honored as a member of the Impact 50, an annual ranking of the most powerful women leaders of Inc. 5000 companies. She is also a sought-after public speaker and nationally published author.

Evette has always been passionate about and focused on improving educational performance in the community, assisting the elderly and the young – especially those facing illness, and helping small- and women-owned businesses. She serves on the boards of directors of the St Francis Foundation (affiliated with Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital) and the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO), where she is also an emeritus member of the state legislative committee.

A native of Ohio, Evette is the granddaughter of Polish immigrants. Her parents, Jennie and Emil Gajoch, were first generation Americans who taught her the value of hard work and the importance of civic duty and giving back. Evette holds a Bachelors of Business Administration in accounting from Cleveland State University.

Thanks to all of you and many others, Fun Nun Bowl VII was a success again this year. Not only that, but it was a great time. Thanks also to Shane Griffin for being our MC, Catholic Radio in SC for their support and everyone who helped make it possible.

We still need several sponsors to send their sponsors checks, so if you have not done so, please do as soon as possible (address below). We hope to get our beneficiaries paid before year end and we can only do that if we get all of the payments in.

Congratulations to “The Men’s Emmaus” team, who I believe won for the 3rd time in the last four years. Looks like a “dynasty” is brewing….Even more impressive now that we have been in the bigger bowling alley the last two years. Last year’s champ, “Mama Kim’s” finished 3rd and John Carroll’s “Wednesday Wisdom” team finished second and has high hopes for next year. Major props to Leo Albano, who flew back in from South Bend on Sunday morning in time to participate in the Fun Nun Bowl again with his Men’s Emmaus squad.

Bringing FM to BE: During the 2018-19 school year Bishop England High School (BEHS) has a unique opportunity to establish its own Low Power FM radio station. Relying on technical assistance from Catholic Radio in South Carolina, BEHS will be the license holder and Catholic Radio in South Carolina will provide tailored programming for the BEHS and Charleston community. With a broadcast antenna and transmitter maintained by Catholic Radio in South Carolina, FM Catholic Radio at BEHS will have clear radio signal coverage encompassing most of metro Charleston.

Once in place, Catholic Radio in South Carolina will provide ongoing technical support to enable the BEHS-FM station to develop its own radio programming. These programs may include student-produced shows, musical performances, and sporting events. BEHS-FM will become a cultural complement and media resource for sustaining and promoting the Catholic community of Charleston.

Catholic Radio in South Carolina: Catholic Radio in South Carolina, Mediatrix, SC, Inc. has grown in response to Pope John Paul II’s call for a “New Evangelization.” In 2003 a group of faithful lay Catholics established Mediatrix SC, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. With the permission of Bishop Robert Guglielmone, in 2013, Catholic Radio in South Carolina began assisting Catholic schools across the state in establishing school-based Low Power FM stations. Currently, seven Low Power FM stations are in operation.

In Mark’s Gospel (4:37-41) we see the apostles trapped in a mighty storm and their fishing boats on the bring of capsizing. And Jesus slept. This confused, scared,
and even angered the apostles who could not fight back the storm. Author, CEO and father of twelve, Mr. Conor Gallagher, relates this short passage to the anxieties of modern life. The chaos of our lives and the demands of those with whom we live and work can leave us feeling as helpless as those apostles in the boat. The world, however, only offers fake solutions to these real problems: over-medication, spurts of carnal pleasure, and “time management” techniques that never suffice.

Conor Gallagher looks to three remedies that underlie all others: First, encountering God in the present moment while avoiding past resentment and future
anxiety; second, listening to the voice of God only found in exterior and interior silence amidst the constant drum of deafening noise; and third, resting in serene
stillness as the stir-crazy spirit of the world goes by.

Mr. Conor Gallagher earned both his Masters in Philosophy and Juris Doctoris from The Catholic University of America. He began his professional career as a law clerk to the Honorable Robert J. Conrad, Chief Judge of the Western District of North Carolina. He has been an adjunct Professor of Philosophy and Political Philosophy at Belmont Abbey College, and is currently the Executive Director of the Benedict Leadership Institute at Belmont Abbey College. Overview

In response to changes in our community related the process of gentrification, three faith-based organizations hosted communities meetings open to the public for the purpose of gathering information from residents. The meetings were held on Tuesday, 24 April at Our Lady of Mercy-Neighborhood House; Sunday, 29 April at Saint Patrick’s Church; and Wednesday, 2 May at Trinity Worldwide Outreach Ministries. We asked participants to complete surveys and participate in group discussions during which we took notes. More than sixty people attended the meetings and forty-seven people completed surveys.

Findings

Residents have witnessed profound changes in our community. These changes have had positive and negative effects in their lives.

The energized real estate market has increased the value of their homes but also brought an array of aggressive buyers that have brought real and perceived pressure (most of it unwelcome) on predominantly older and elderly home-owners.

As neighborhoods change, residents are encountering increased property taxes and new neighbor with expectations for property maintenance that may be beyond the financial resources of long-time homeowners.

In some cases, unscrupulous buyers are exploiting and, potentially swindling elderly, vulnerable homeowners. Added to this dynamic is the fact that many buyers are white and many of those feeling pressured to sell are black.

Homeowners often do not feel confident that they have in the community or in government advocates that will protect their interests. While not all, many feel that they lack adequate information to make informed decisions related to their property; whether it regards maintenance, taxes, and sales.

Residents have confidence in their churches and are willing to look to churches for information if they know that the churches have resource capacity.

Recommendations

Establish resource centers at select churches and faith-based institutions.

Develop resource materials to be shared through the participating churches and faith-based institutions.

Facilitate the development of collaborative operational partnerships that will develop and maintain necessary resources.

Provide venues for periodic community training and information sessions.

Develop an ongoing process for tracking community changes and conducting periodic quantitative analysis

Stimulate the involvement of a broad array of community volunteers to provide specific services such as limited home improvement.

Facilitate, on an ongoing basis, opportunities for discussion and community-building among new and long-term residents.

Develop and private, nonprofit, faith-based, self-sustaining community fund to provide support for homeowners in the areas of property improvement and tax relief.

Action Plan

Phase One

Identify community support volunteers willing to educate residents, assist, advocate and more

Compile community resource guide to answer resident questions and provide points of contact

Develop a database for distributing news and information among community networks

Define collaborating partner roles—organizations, groups, and, professional service providers

Determine web/social media strategy and presence

Raise awareness- publish findings, share findings

Follow up with meeting attendees by providing progress updates

Phase Two

Schedule community education and information sharing sessions

Finalize resource guide and summary fact sheets for distribution at various collaborating partner locations

Develop and schedule volunteer roles

Prepare plan to conduct in-home maintenance service for residents in need

Conduct awareness-raising outreach to realtors, attorneys, and others on action plan and community concerns

Develop and refine assessment methods

Track interactions with residents through Phase Two efforts and monitor potential changes in community needs

Seek funding to support efforts

Establish micro-financing fund for home-owners in need

Conduct “tip sheet” mailings to residents for continued education and information sharing

Develop neighbor-to-neighbor meetings to share neighborhood history with new comers

Develop neighbor-to-neighbor meetings with new and legacy businesses

Schedule neighborhood-oriented ecumenical Christian services to foster unity

Schedule neighborhood-oriented Christian Holiday events

Conduct neighborhood-oriented volunteer community improvement projects

Encourage “Know Your Neighbor” activities

The Case for a Permanent Catholic Campus Ministry Location At the College of Charleston

The Need

The college years are often seen and feared by parents and the public as a time during which the secular world erodes the Christian faith of students. In fact, Mass attendance is declining among all age groups. Yet longitudinal studies of young Catholics have found that eight out of ten students enter college with the spiritual desire to deepen their faith.

Perhaps more than previous generations, studies find that today’s college students resist structure. They seek a comfortable safe place, a home, among peers. As is well known, the current college generation is more bound than any prior to electronic devices linked to digital communities and social networks. They have grown up in homes gathered in living rooms with each family member intently involved with their personal devices. The paradox of communal isolation is a hallmark. Other interfaith studies have found that students with spiritual longing gain the most from shared experiences with peers through study, service, and one-on-one peer interaction.

Many traditional structures and processes of Catholic youth outreach are often not aligned with the needs of today’s college students. However, the longstanding Newman Center model stands out because it offers the home and faith community environment that students want and need. The key elements of the Newman Model include a permanent gathering place that is comfortably like home, large enough space for gatherings of forty or more people, close proximity to the college campus and a Catholic Church; and a kitchen available for large meals and off-hour and late-night snacks. In short, it is a loving Catholic family home away from home.

This conceptual and empirical depiction of what a Catholic campus ministry center should be is affirmed by the testimony of the former and current students involved in Campus Ministry at the College of Charleston. In what had been the temporary center called the Upper Room, one former student said that you would regularly find ten to fifteen students gathered in this “comfortable and safe space” to study at any time of the day or night. Because upperclassmen would naturally become peer mentors for underclassmen, students with demanding class and study schedules would retreat to the Upper Room for peaceful fellowship and quiet study rather than the library. According to the students, these one-on-one relationships were vital to deepening the students’ faith because they saw their peers living as quiet witnesses to the Gospel. As one said, “You become more like the people you spend time with.”

The students who spent their days in the Upper Room also regularly attended Mass at Saint Patrick’s, inviting Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Many non-Catholic friends became regular Mass attendees. The students who shared their experiences came from homes that were both very and not very devout. Yet they all found that their experience in campus ministry through the Upper Room deepened their faith and made them truer followers of Christ.

Today, Campus Ministry is without a home. Saint Patrick’s Parish continues to offer a student Mass and provides meeting space for a weekly community meal. Yet the program is without ongoing meeting space. With deep concern for the spiritual well-being of young people at the College of Charleston and interest in ensuring that the ministry finds appropriate permanent space to renew the program and feed the spiritual hunger of young people for the Truth found only in Christ, a group of lay Catholics have joined to provide support for the ministry and work with the parish and diocese to find an acceptable permanent solution.

The Solution

The “Newman Center” model continues to be the most effective and distinctive approach to Catholic college ministry on large and mid-size campuses. This model stands out because it offers the home and faith community environments that students want and need.

The key elements of the Newman Model dedicated center include:

Close proximity both to the college campus within well lit, safe walking distance for late night travel (St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, our parish home away from home parish, could not be better located)

Permanent gathering place that is comfortably like home – dedicated only for campus ministry use

Large enough “living room” space for gatherings of forty or more people (e.g., movie nights, speakers, discussions, etc.)

Two bathrooms – handicap accessible

Main entrance and at least ground floor handicap accessible

Kitchen available for prep of large meals and off-hour and late-night snacks

Study rooms adequate for private and small group study

Private ministry office for both workstation and pastoral counseling

Multiple electric circuits, outlets, and charging stations for the “wired” generation

A small quiet meditation prayer room

Total space requirement of about 3,000 – 4,000 square feet

Dear Friends in Christ,

Like yours, my heart is sick and aches at the horrific news of abuse and complicity by members of the clergy of our Church. I despair that the darkness and evil of the world has infected our Church. I feel righteous anger and want to demand accountability and transparency from the temporal stewards of our one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

I want to do something, but that “something” must be positive. So what to do? Looking to Micah 6:8 I am reminded: “You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Our Lady with incomprehensible patience reminds us that the way forward in every crisis of faith is prayer. As the Saints demonstrate emulating the example of our Lord on the Cross, prayer is always made better with sacrifice.

With that in mind, in reparation for the sins of our clergy, I plan to fast and offer a Rosary on the fourth Fridays of the month. There is, of course, more that you can do. You can join in the already underway 54 Day Rosary Novena for our Nation (www.novenaforournation.com/54-day-novena).

In prayer, we should always look to Saint Joseph. 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles.
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love.

Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and Summer First Friday Networking Lunches

On this day we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus it is fitting to share the First Friday Devotion, which was the inspiration for scheduling the Carolina Catholic Professionals’ First Friday Fellowship and Networking Lunches.

FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION

Nine consecutive Fridays in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Our Lord appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alocoque (1647-1690), a French nun in the Visitation Order, and gave her the special task to spread devotion to His Most Sacred Heart at a time when religion was growing cold in the hearts of mankind.

He said to her:

“Behold this heart which, notwithstanding the burning love for men with which it is consumed and exhausted, meets with no other return from most Christians than sacrilege, contempt, indifference and ingratitude, even in the sacrament of my love [the Eucharist]. But what pierces my heart most deeply is that I am subjected to these insults by persons especially consecrated to my service.”

Jesus asked for special prayers and practices to make amends (reparation) for this great neglect to the proper reverence owed to God. For those who did this faithfully, he made what St. Margaret Mary referred to as the “Great Promise” which was the last and greatest of the Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

“I promise you in the unfathomable mercy of my heart that my omnipotent love will procure the grace of final penitence for all those who receive communion on nine successive first Fridays of the month; they will not die in my disfavor [the grace of final repentance], or without having received the sacraments, since my divine heart will be their sure refuge in the last moments of their life.”

CONDITIONS TO FULFILL THE FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION

The specific conditions to receive the Great Promise of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are:

1. Receive Holy Communion on nine consecutive first Fridays of the month (this assumes that the person is in a state of grace, having made a sacramental confession for any mortal sins prior to receiving communion).

2. Having the intention, at least implicitly, of making reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for all the sinfulness and ingratitude of men.

The “Fun Nun Bowl” Charity Bowling tournament is in its 6th year. Our event will be held at Ashley Lanes in West Ashley on Sunday, September 24th from 1-5 pm. This year we are expanding from 16 teams to 20 teams (ages 12 and up) competing for the Fun Nun Bowl VI title and four lanes reserved for kids (under 12) bowling. Each of the 20 teams will consist of five bowlers at $40 per bowler/$200 per team. Price includes t-shirt, 2+ hours of bowling, drink and food specials, silent auction, and door prizes. Our “Fun Nun Bowl” was started in 2012 to honor the daughters of St. Paul, raise funds for them and other charities in need, and build community. Through the first five Fun Nun Bowls, we’ve raised over $35k (including more than $10k each of the last two years) for several charities. As mentioned, it is also a community building event and each year we’ve been blessed to have more and more support. Our former host, PINZ/Sparians (now Aldi’s), told us and others many times “this is the best run event here every year” and they would have us speak to others that wanted to hold a tournament.

Our event supports The Daughters of St. Paul, The Neighborhood House (which is run by Our Lady of Mercy and feeds/clothes the hungry in downtown Charleston, as well as providing GED programs to help break the cycle of poverty); “Camp Rise Above” which helps children with special needs and disabilities who would otherwise not be able to go to camp, have a camp experience. “The Lowcountry Pregnancy Center”, which provides support to women who often don’t know they have support and options CNEWA – The Catholic Near East Wealthfare Agency is based out of New York City. Our donation specifically goes to an orphanage in Lebanon (which is already in desperate need, but that need is magnified with the refugee crisis in Syria and Iraq) and for Survival kits for Christians in Syria and Iraq. Catholic Radio in the Lowcountry. And “Forty Days for Life.”

Using the blog gadget, you can add a blog to your Wild Apricot site to provide timely updates and information to your membership.

By using Recent blog posts, you can display a list of the most recent blog posts, with links to the full posts. The list will include the date of each post and the name of the poster – with the name linking to their profile if available.

WA blog settings and setting up restrictions

You can create as many different blogs as you wish. You can limit access to a blog by placing it on a restricted page. If you make the page public, you can still use the blog gadget settings to control functionality for visitors and members.
