At noon on November 2, members and supporters of the Carolina Catholic Professionals held a remembrance for the souls buried at Saint John's Cemetery in downtown Charleston. The remains of as many as one thousand souls are buried in this Catholic cemetery.  Frank Dirks, Marie Donnelley, and Joan Mack read the names of the 380 people known to be buried there.  Rev. Timothy Akanson, Parochial Vicar at Christ Our King, led a Rosary in remembrance of our departed brothers and sisters.

A conversation with Joseph Pearce

Internationally celebrated author Joseph Pearce joined us for a two-night Zoom conversation centered around two of his books: "Race with the Devil: My Journey from Racial Hatred to Rational Love" and "Solzhenitsyn: A Soul in Exile."  

Our conversation with Mr. Pearce explored racism, materialism, resistance to totalitarianism, and forgiveness and reconciliation through Christ Jesus. 

Our two nights with Mr. Pearce kicked off our campaign to support the  Saint John Cemetery Memorial Project.

On First Friday in October, Barbara Denton shared her moving story of how her faith in Christ guided her in establishing Camp Rise Above, a nonprofit dedicated to providing fun and life-changing camp experiences for children with serious illnesses, life challenges, and disabilities.  Their motto is: "Giving children strength for the journey."  Since 2011, Camp Rise Above has touched the lives of more than 1,700 children and their families.

Meeting Outcomes

We discussed the possibility that virus mitigation efforts will require the cancellation of the kick-off event.  We decided to continue planning until such time as circumstances require a different course.

Before the meeting Patrick shared his request to the Diocese for the Bishop’s role in the launch event, which would include a Mass, blessing of equipment, and a small gathering with special guests.  We are awaiting a response from the Diocese but will proceed as if that will be the schedule.

Jason reported that Catholic Radio technicians have conducted and onsite installation assessment that resulted in changes to the original planning assumptions.  The antenna now will be mounted on the chimney of Building B.  The transmitter will be located in Jason’s work area.  This arrangement will require new high-speed fiber cable.  Frank will reach out to Michael Brennan on installation status.  (Since our meeting, Michael has indicated that after remodeling the transmitter room and fiber installation next week he anticipates providing a firm date range for installation and broadcast commencement.)

Lindsay is the collection point for all individuals and groups to be invited to the launch day.  We agreed that she will manage two lists; the first for broadly announcing WBEI to the community and the second a smaller list of key individuals for participation in the special event with the Bishop.  Everyone should submit names/groups/contacts by the end of next week.  Frank will seek names of key St. Clare of Assisi parishioners from Father West.

Frank has connected with the Knights of Peter Claver and they will participate along with the Knights of Columbus.

Meghan will lead the logo development process involving Lindsay, Eduardo, Joan, and Joe.  They will accelerate the process to finalize the design by the end of next week.  All agreed on a two-color design.

Frank, working with Lindsay, Meghan, and Patrick, will prepare a talking-point/case-statement by next week.  This will serve the message for our communications outreach that we will execute in collaboration with the Diocese communications office.

Meghan will work with Eduardo, Richard, and David Seay on digital platform development.

Joan has made contact with a Post & Courier feature writer, Adam Parker, and will make an introduction to our communications team.

Clayton offered to be a point of contact for printing options.

How to Pray the Rosary 

The Introduction

Begin the Rosary by making the sign of the Cross:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Then say the Apostle's Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, 
Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ,
His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. 
He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; 
He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. 
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

The Decades and Mysteries

The traditional Rosary is divided into three parts, each having five mysteries: Glorious, Joyful and Sorrowful. In his apostolic letter The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, Pope John Paul II proposed a new set of mysteries, which he called the Luminous, and which concern the period of the public life of Our Lord. For those who wish to say all 20 decades at once during the course of a day, they may be said in the following order: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious. 

For each decade of the rosary, announce the mystery and pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and One Glory be while meditating upon some aspect of that mystery.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the greatest gifts that Christ and his Church have offered us.  It is a living testimony to His Divine Mercy.  Yet it is often most difficult for us sinners to receive because we are afraid.  Opening our hearts to Christ in Reconciliation forces us to come to terms with our guilt, shame, pride, and doubt.  That’s why, remembering that Christ sent his disciples out in pairs, we can help our brothers and sisters by accompanying them to the threshold of Reconciliation.
