Our speaker will be Ericka Plater, Executive Director of Our Lady of Mercy Outreach. Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach has been serving our neighbors in need at Neighborhood House in Charleston for more than one hundred years and on John’s Island since 1989. Ms. Plater has been a non-profit and community leader for more than eighteen years. She earned her B.A. from Howard University and her M.S. and M.B.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Judge Arthur McFarland shares the moving story of his Catholic-faith journey. Growing up in segregated Charleston and converting to Catholicism Judge McFarland encountered social obstacles even within the Church. Yet over time he found his faith in Christ and His Church grow stronger through the Sacraments. As he underscored, the faith of African American Catholics offers powerful testimony to the saving power of Christ, since their faith was manifest despite the sometime inhospitable institution of the Church and its leadership.

Please join Carolina Catholic Professionals for our First Friday Networking and Fellowship Lunch at the Diocese Chancery Meeting Hall on Friday, April 5, 2019 from 11:45am to 1:15pm.  This event is open to both members and non-members.  Lunch will be $15 for members and $25 for non-members.

Our speaker will be Arthur McFarland, attorney, retired judge, St. Patrick’s Church parishioner, and a leader in the Charleston Area Justice Ministry.

Our theme for these lunches is how we engage the world in faith and bear witness to the Gospel in the way we live our lives.  With one foot in the Church and one in the world we are all on the same journey.  We ask our speakers to discuss their personal journey of faith and their work in the world and what they see to be meaningful trends and developments in our community, state, and nation.

Colonel Myron Harrington shares his experience leading the U.S. Marines of Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment in capturing a critical objective during the Battle of Hue. After the battle, he saw press photos of his command post under a large cross. While unaware of it during the battle it is an image that affirms his faith in the saving power of God.
